Attractions off the beaten pathNew Archangel Dancers

BLARNEY STONE as referred to by John Brady, when used as the corner of his homestead claim, was also called Baranof’s rock during Russian days. Located by this rock are some of the many petroglyphs found in Southeast Alaska.

FORTRESS OF THE BEAR Located at the Sawmill Cove Industrial Park, provides a three-quarter acre habitat for orphaned brown bears complete with covered viewing areas and an adjacent public petting farm.

NEW ARCHANGEL DANCERS Authentic Russian dances performed by local women in authentic costumes since 1969. Times and dates are posted daily at Harrigan Centennial Hall.

SHEET’KA KWAAN NAA KAHIDI DANCERS Performances in full Native regalia at The Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi Building (Tribal Community House). Times and dates are posted daily at Harrigan Centennial Hall.

JAPONSKI ISLAND WWII headquarters for military forces who served in Sitka. During WWII, Japonski Island was connected by a man-made causeway in the 1940’s to the surrounding chain of islands which served as a location for bunkers and gunning sites. The island was connected to Sitka by the O’Connell Bridge in 1972, and is presently the site of USCG Air Station, University of Alaska Southeast, Mt. Edgecumbe High School, Southeast Alaska Regional Health Center, and the Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport.Mariner's Wall

THE MARINER’S WALL located at ANB Harbor, is a brick wall with 2,000 inscriptions representing the rich maritime history of Southeast Alaska and a memorial to mariners.

SITKA NATIONAL CEMETERY Selected by an army major of the 9th infantry as Alaska’s first Army cemetery it officially became a National Cemetery in 1924, making it the first National Cemetery west of the Mississippi.

WHALE PARK provides an opportunity to view wildlife from the boardwalk, including humpback whales in fall & early spring. The park is located 6 miles south of downtown and has two picnic areas, viewing scopes and hydrophone.
