Step back in time by visiting the Sitka History Museum and Sitka National Historic Park. Dive into Alaska Native heritage and learn about the Russian and Tlingit impact on Sitka by exploring St. Michael’s Cathedral and Totem Park.

Alaska Raptor Center
The Alaska Raptor Center is a hospital and sanctuary for birds-of-prey, as well as a premier educational facility. Its primary goal is to provide medical treatment to injured feathered creatures.
A special few that do not make a full recovery may join the Center’s Raptors-in-Residence team. Guests can view these ambassadors, including eagles, hawks, owls and falcons from outdoor enclosures and observe multiple recovering eagles in the Center’s 20,000 cubic foot flight training facility.

Fortress Of The Bear
A safe, spectacular, educational place to view bears. It was created out of a desire to provide a humane alternative for Alaska’s urbanized bears, reducing the need for their destruction. Bears are provided a natural habitat for their protection, care, and enrichment.

A well developed trail system begins with a 10 minute walk from downtown Sitka that will put you on the fringe of true wilderness. For more information on Sitka trails, contact the Forest Sitka Ranger District or visit Sitka Trail Works online.

Harbor Mountain & Gavan Hill
This difficult trail has two trail heads and can be done as one long hike or two out and back hikes.
Indian River Trail
The unsigned trailhead is at the end of Indian River Road It is an easy, out and back, 4.5 mile hike that ends at a lovely, small waterfall.
Cross Trails
This easy trail is perfect for a short stroll or longer walk with muliple trailheads along Sitka’s roadway.
Herring Cove Trail
Herring Cove Trail is a moderate out and back trail that takes you up into the muskeg and around Beaver lake.
Mt. Verstovia Trail
This difficult trail has a 2,500 ft elevation gain is is just 2.5 miles. The view of Sitka is spectacular with the trail ending in sub-alpine meadows.
Goddard Hot Springs
The city of Sitka maintains two public tubs at Goddard Hot Springs, about 17 water miles south of town. Many charter operators will take you there.
Fishing in the Sitka area is at its very best June through August. The most commonly landed species are king, silver and pink salmon, halibut, and lingcod. Licenses are required and can be purchased by the charter operator, at one of the sporting goods stores in town or the Alaska Department of Fish & Game. A processor in town can freeze and vacuum pack your catch for the trip home.
