Your Guide to Alaska Day in Sitka

Every October, Sitka celebrates Alaska Day, and for good reason. It all started here. If you’re planning a fall visit, Alaska Day in Sitka is the time to come.

The History Behind Alaska Day

On October 18, 1867, Alaska officially went from Russia to the United States, and the transfer actually took place in Sitka.

The treaty was signed in March, but the handover happened right here in Sitka, Alaska in October. There was a march to “Castle Hill”, and the lowering of the Russian flag, followed by the raising of the U.S. flag.

Before the sale, Alaska was part of Russian America, which is why there’s so much Russian history here. Old forts can be found and you can even check out the Russian Church, which is located in the heart of downtown and not easy to miss.

Naturally sue to all the history, Sitka goes all out for Alaska Day like nowhere else.
