Commonly referred to as Castle Hill, this park is one of the most historically significant sites in Alaska. Originally inhabited by Tlingit people, the site later became a Russian stronghold between 1804 and 1867. On October 18, 1867, Castle Hill was the location of the formal transfer of Alaska from Russia to the United States, an event still commemorated each year on Alaska Day.
Today, Castle Hill is a state historic site and a National Historic Landmark. A fully accessible walkway leads visitors to the top of the hill, where interpretive panels share the site’s layered history and sweeping views overlook downtown Sitka and the waterfront.
