All About Totem Square

Totem Square is a small public park that reflects Sitka’s layered Tlingit, Russian, and American history through art and artifacts. The central totem pole, often called the Baranov Totem Pole, incorporates both Tlingit clan crests and Russian symbolism, representing a complicated shared past. The pole was restored in 2010–2011 by local Tlingit artist Tommy Joseph.

The square also features a Russian cannon and historic anchors recovered from the Sitka area, along with a longtime local tradition known as the “money tree.” Located at the edge of downtown near the Naa Kahidi Tribal Community House and the Alaska Pioneer Home, Totem Square is a peaceful stop for reflection, photography, and learning while walking between nearby historic sites.
