The Sitka Historical Society & Museum (also known as The Sitka History Museum) is dedicated to telling the human story of Sitka and the surrounding region, a mission reflected in the depth and diversity of its collections and archives. Founded in the 1950s by a group of committed volunteers, the historical society began by gathering items of local significance and working toward a permanent home, securing museum space in Centennial Harrigan Hall in downtown Sitka in 1967.
Building on that early effort, the Sitka History Museum now holds one of the largest and most diverse collections in Sitka, including more than 8,000 artifacts, hundreds of works of art, nearly 25,000 historic photographs, and over 100,000 archival documents dating from the 1740s to the present day.
