All About Taste of Sitka

Explore Historic Castle Hill & Lincoln Street

Taste of Sitka is a journey through the history, culture, and stories that have shaped Sitka into one of Alaska’s most unique destinations. You’ll explore Castle Hill, Lincoln Street, and Sitka National Historical Park along the way. During this 2+ hour tour, guests discover Sitka’s rich past, including Tlingit culture and the Russian era of the early 1800s.

The tour begins at Castle Hill, site of the 1867 transfer of Alaska from Russia to the United States. Here, you’ll hear stories of early conflicts between the Tlingit people and Russian settlers. From there, the walk continues down Lincoln Street with stops at notable sites, including St. Michael’s Cathedral and the Russian Bishop’s House, before ending at Sitka National Historical Park.

Your guide, Bob Purvis, is a retired University of Alaska Southeast professor and licensed charter captain. He has called Sitka home for many years. With decades of experience, Bob shares local history in a way that feels both engaging and personal.

In addition, the tour is designed to be accessible and welcoming to guests of all abilities, including those with vision or mobility challenges. To keep the experience personal, group sizes are usually limited to six guests. However, larger groups traveling together can also be accommodated.

Each tour includes admission to the Sitka Historical Museum, Sitka Sound Science Center, and Sheldon Jackson Hatchery. Guests also receive a locally made chocolate treat.

Tours must be scheduled at least one week in advance.
